Plaque with a Buddhist Triad and Symbols, 7th century Thailand: Si Thep(?), Mon-Dvaravati period, 600-699 Gold repoussé 2-1/4 x 3-5/8 in. (5.7 x 9.2 cm) Norton Simon Art Foundation M.1975.15.1.1.S © Norton Simon Art Foundation On view These four gold repoussé plaques depict various Buddhist and animist deities. Objects such as these would have been deposited as offerings in religious monuments such as stupas. The center plaque features a standing figure, perhaps a lunar deity. The leaping hare in the halo is a pan-Asian reference to the moon. |
