Bhudevi, c. 1025 India: Tamil Nadu, 1000-1050 Bronze 26-1/2 x 9-1/2 x 8 in. (67.3 x 24.1 x 20.3 cm) Norton Simon Art Foundation M.1975.17.1.S © Norton Simon Art Foundation On view Vishnu is often depicted with his consorts Sri Lakshmi and Bhu Devi. Sri Lakshmi, the goddess of beauty and good fortune, is Vishnu’s main consort. She is distinguished from Bhu Devi by the breast band (kuchabandha) that adorns her chest. Bhu Devi is the earth goddess. Although she is just as beautiful as Sri Lakshmi, she does not have any distinguishing features. Each figure would have held up a lotus, one of Vishnu’s main attributes, in her raised hand. |
